Waste management overview

Ac-225 waste is managed almost exclusively through decay-in-storage under 10 CFR §35.92. The practical hold time is not the parent's 9.9-day half-life — it is the time required for the full decay chain (down through Pb-209) to reach detectable-background levels on both alpha and gamma surveys. Plan capacity, segregation, and release procedures around the chain, not the parent.

Minimum requirements

At minimum, an Ac-225 waste program needs documented, surveyed, and access-controlled handling across three functional zones:

Generation point

  • Stream-specific containers at the hot lab and administration room
  • Container labels with isotope, generation date, expected release date, AU
  • Inventory log entry made at generation, not at release

Decay-in-storage room

  • Secured, ventilated room sized for peak hold inventory × chain hold time
  • First-in / first-out staging by generation date
  • Segregation by stream (sharps, soft, liquid) and approximate activity

Release & disposal

  • Alpha-capable survey station (ZnS) plus wipe-test counter
  • Written release-survey procedure with explicit pass/fail thresholds
  • Manifest templates updated for Ac-225 and its progeny
Carries over from RLT
  • Decay-in-storage as the default disposal pathway
  • Documentation and manifest discipline per 10 CFR §35.92 and §20.2001
  • Secured, ventilated waste storage with controlled access
  • Release surveys before any container leaves the storage room
New for alpha
  • Hold time governed by the full decay chain, not the 9.9-day parent
  • Alpha-bearing classification differs from beta/gamma waste
  • Release surveys must be alpha-capable, not gamma-only
  • Patient consumables (gloves, gowns, dressings, absorbents) get more scrutiny
Tip

A common waste-program failure mode isn't regulatory — it's running out of storage capacity in month three because hold time was sized to the parent half-life. Sizing against the chain and then doubling for ramp helps avoid it.
