Nursing

Nursing staff own the patient-facing portions of the visit: pre-administration prep, monitoring, post-administration counseling, and discharge. Nursing competencies for Ac-225 are role-specific and should not be folded into a generic radiation-safety in-service.

Pre-administration

IV access workflow, baseline vitals, confirmation of written directive, and patient identification per institutional policy.

During and after administration

Acute observation, contamination awareness during patient contact, and immediate notification pathway if a spill or extravasation occurs.

Discharge counseling

Plain-language patient and caregiver instructions tailored to Ac-225 — hydration, restroom use, contact precautions, follow-up scheduling.

Tip

Extravasation response is the single most-asked-about scenario in nursing competency assessments. Make sure the response procedure is short, posted at the chair, and rehearsed — not buried in a 40-page manual.
