Nuclear medicine team

Physicians, medical physicists, and nuclear medicine technologists carry the operational responsibility for safe administration of Ac-225. Their training must cover both the science (alpha radiobiology) and the practice (contamination control and daughter-chain monitoring).

Physician (AU)

Alpha radiobiology, written-directive workflow, complication management, and the differences from beta-emitter therapy in patient counseling.

Medical physicist (AMP)

Dose calibrator settings, survey instrument selection and calibration, dosimetry program review, and validation of any program changes.

Nuclear medicine technologist

Dose draw, QC, administration assist, daughter-isotope monitoring, contamination surveys, and spill response. Hands-on instrument time, not slides.

Technologist competency depth

Instrument fluency

Each technologist should demonstrate, on a signed checklist: dose-calibrator Ac-225 setting selection, ZnS scintillator survey of a known source, contamination wipe technique, and interpretation of alpha vs beta/gamma counts on the laboratory counter.

Daughter-chain awareness

Practical understanding of why a survey reading 30 minutes post-spill differs from an immediate reading, why Bi-213 gamma can be used as a surrogate for Ac-225 contamination localization, and when to defer release surveys per §35.92 decay-in-storage logic.
