Environmental services (EVS) staff clean the restricted areas every day. Training them to recognize and escalate — not attempt to manage — radiological situations is one of the highest-leverage moves a new program can make.
Recognition
What restricted-area signage means, what a contamination indicator looks like, and the difference between routine cleaning and a radiological event.
Escalation
Who to call, in what order, when something doesn't look right. EVS staff should never be asked to make a judgment call on contamination — they should always escalate.
Routine cleaning
Approved cleaning agents, surface compatibility, and the post-cleaning hand-off back to the radiation safety team for survey.
Building EVS training in partnership with the EVS supervisor — rather than as a one-off RSO presentation — tends to land better. Translating into the operational language EVS teams actually use is what makes it stick.
